What are the Methods and Mechanisms of Tissue Transplantation

Just like organ transplantation, tissue transplants such as corneas, bones, blood vessels, tendons (both referred to as musculoskeletal grafts), skin, and cardiac valves are gaining importance in the the modern medical procedures. To mention it in broad sense, tissue transplantations play a vital role in all modern plastic and reconstructive surgeries. Tissues that are collected from the different donors, can be transplanted using various methods and mechanisms such as –

  • Autografts (within the same person’s body)
  • Allografts (between two genetically non-identical species)
  • Xenograft( between two different species)
  • Isograft( between two genetically identical species)

However, transplant rejection occurs in tissues when the recipient’s immune system rejects and destroys the transplanted tissue.
