What are Vitamin Supplements?

Vitamin supplements are also referred to as health supplements , dietary supplements or nutritional supplements. This is because they perform the important function of supplementing the body with vitamins that, for some reason, may be lacking in a person s diet. Basically, a vitamin is an organic compound which the body needs as an essential nutrient to work properly. Vitamins cannot be produced in the body itself. They help the body to release energy from the food that we eat. We ought to be able to get all the vitamins we need from our diet. In case we do not, this is where vitamin supplements come in.

When Should we take Vitamin Supplements?

Vitamin supplements should be taken only on medical prescription as excess of certain vitamins, such as fat-soluble vitamins, may not be good for health. Certain groups of people only should be taking vitaminsupplements regularly. For example:

  • Folic acid are given at the time of pregnancy or to women who wish to conceive.
  • Vitamin D supplements are given to all pregnant women, lactating mothers, children, elderly people, and people who are not exposed enough to the sun.
  • Supplements containing vitamins A, C and D should be given to growing children and especially to fussy eaters.
  • Additionally, your doctor may prescribe supplements if you have a medical condition or ailment, for example, Vitamin E for a skin or hair problem.

Side Effects of Vitamin Supplements:

Excess ingestion of vitamins or taking them for too long can lead to vitamin overdose. Too much of anything cannot be good for us. Vitamin overdose can lead to any of the following: headache, nervous system damage, apathy, calcium deposits, deafness, fatigue, headache, loss of appetite, kidney stones, weak bones, hypertension, high cholesterol, blurring of vision, ringing in the ears, dizziness insomnia, irritability, liver damage, stupor, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hair loss, joint pain, skin rash, menstrual irregularities, fatigue, abnormal bone growth etc.

Recommended Dosage for Vitamin Supplements:

There is not set dosage. It differs from person to person depending upon their food and lifestyle. This is why you should consult a medical practitioner before taking vitamin supplements.
