Vatana Usal Ingredients

  • White peas - ½ cups
  • Ginger-Garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • Tomato, finely chopped - 1 big size
  • Onion, chopped - ½ medium size
  • Oil - 1 tsp (to fry)
  • Cumin powder - ½ tsp 
  • Red chilli powder - ½ tsp 
  • Garam masala - ½ tsp
  • Cilantro for garnishing - 5 sprigs
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Salt - to taste

Vatana Usal Preparation Method

  • The white peas are soaked in 1½ cup of water for minimum of 5-6 hours.
  • Cook the peas with soaked water in a pressure cooker to 2 whistles.
  •  In a skillet add oil and heat.
  • Add onions, chopped tomatoes and ginger-garlic paste and let them fry with frequent stirring till the mix starts to leave oil. This takes about 10 minutes.
  • Add coriander powder, garam masala, cumin powder, red chilli powder and salt. 
  • Now, add the white peas along with the mixture and add water.
  • Let it boil and cover the skillet with a lid and leave it for 20-25 minutes on low flame with frequent stirring so that the peas do not stick.
  • Finally garnish with cilantro.
  • Vatana Usal is finally ready and can be served piping hot.
