Quick And EasyVaran Bhat Ingredients
- 2 cup Toor Dal
- 1 ½ Long grain rice (basmati rice)
- 1 ½ Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
- 1 Teaspoon Cumin Powder
- 1 Teaspoon Asafoetida
- 1 Teaspoon squeezed lemon juice
- 1 Teaspoon Ghee
- 1 Teaspoon Vegetable oil
- Salt to taste
- Water 2 cups enough to cook rice and dal
Varan Bhat Preparation Method
- W ash the Tur dal properly and soak it in water for 20-30 minutes. Soaking before pressure cooking will help in preparing dal quicker.
- Similar to Tur dal, wash and soak the basmati rice in water covering the top layer.
- Pressure cook the rice with ¾ cup of water for about 3-4 whistles
- After 20-30 minutes, pressure cook the soaked dal with water for about 4-5 whistles.
- Mix the varan (dal) lightly.
- Ensure that the dal is thick.
- Next, add asfoetida, turmeric powder and salt to taste.
- Add ghee to the Varan (dal).
- Keep the flame low and let it pressure cook for 5minutes.
- Garnish the varan with lemon juice; slit green chilies and a teaspoon of butter or ghee.
- Serve varan (dal) with hot bhat (rice).
