It is a relatively simple operation and one out of every five women has to undergo this operation due to certain gynecological problems. Sometimes diagnosis of cancer of the cervix or uterus makes it necessary to undergo this operation. It is a life saving procedure in many cases. Women suffering from fibroids, heavy menstrual flow, pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis needs to undergo this operation.
Removal of uterus or Hysterectomy in medical terminology is a surgical procedure where in uterus is removed from the female’s body in case of any problem. Removal of fallopian tube or one or both ovaries may or may not be combined in this operation. Salpingo-oopphorectomy is the technical term that is used to denote removal of a tube and ovary. Similarly, removal of both tubes and ovaries is known as bilateral salpingo-oophorectomies. It is known as BSO in short.
In 1507, the description of uterus removal was given for the first time by Berengarius of Bologna.
Professor Porro carried out the first planned uterus removal operation in 1876.
Removal of ovaries has become relatively a simple surgical procedure and is done in large numbers every day.
Uterus is generally removed when a woman is suffering from one or many of the conditions such as heavy menstrual flow, endometriosis, and inflammation of pelvic walls, cancer of ovaries or cancer of the cervix.
In some cases, removal of uterus is entirely a elective procedure wherein it is carried out to relieve a woman from discomfort such as improving quality of life, heavy menstrual flow, pain accompanied with bleeding, etc.
Sometimes, it interferes with normal problems and therefore this operation becomes necessary.
It is a life saving procedure.
