Toddler Sleep Problems

There are many reasons why toddlers don’t get enough sleep. They can experience some kind of sleep problem and wake up feeling tired and grumpy. Studies have confirmed that children are likely to fall sick if they don’t get enough sleep. This brings on issues with memory, behavior and even serious health issues.

Dealing with Issues

Some of the major problems which lead to lack of enough sleep are:

Too many activities: Many children participate in too many activities which leaves them very tired. They also need some down time from activities to relax. This in turn helps them to sleep well at night.

Technology: Playing too many video games, watching TV or spending too much time on the computer can cause problems for young children.

Caffeine: Caffeine is found in the unlikeliest of places like chocolate, iced teas and even some ice creams. It is even found in some over the counter medicines like Excedrin - so make sure to check the ingredients before giving it to the child.

Troubleshooting Sleep Issues:

  • Getting one’s toddler to sleep through the night can be a bit of a challenge.
  • Spend time with the child every night, reading stories so that they feel reassured and soothed.
  • Make sure that they sleep at the same time every night and don’t have too many distractions like TV etc.
  • Arrange their room with their favorite things so children want to sleep in their own room. Discourage a child from sleeping with their parents as this can be disruptive for both parties.
