Most surgical procedures have long and complicated names. One can understand the meaning of many surgical procedure names if it is broken into smaller parts. Take the example of the word splenectomy, in this word the surffix is “ectomy” which means removing a part of the body. The word “Splene” means spleen and “otomy” means to cut a certain part of the body. Therefore, splenectomy means to remove the spleen with the help of a surgical procedure but this would not mean to remove the spleen.
In the field of surgery, there are many new words that have emerged like laparoscopic or arthroscopic surgery. It is similar to the above form; an arthroscope is a certain type of device which enables surgeons to have an inside view of the joint.
