Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are the marks which are observed when a person is obese or when a women is pregnant. When the skin stretches more than normal then there are scars which are formed on the skin. In medical terms they are also known as ‘Striae’. When the dermis of the skin loses its elasticity then there is a scar which is formed. This can be due to various reasons. There is nothing to worry if you observe stretch marks on your body. There are many people who have stretch marks on their body. These are not permanent marks, over a period of time they tend to vanish automatically as the body starts healing the skin internally.

For healing stretch marks there are natural and chemical ways of doing it. Mostly they naturally vanish but leave a light scar which is hardly visible. Though skin is the only organ which has elasticity, when the threshold of the elasticity is broken then you are prone to have stretch marks. 75 – 90% of the women who are pregnant have stretch marks after delivery.

Symptoms of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks have very evident symptoms which cannot be missed by a naked eye. They initially are visible as reddish purple lines and slowly they become into stretch marks. They are formed in the dermis which is the middle layer of the skin. Depending on the way the area is stretching the stretch marks appear. Some of the common areas where the stretch marks are formed are abdomen, underarms, upper arms, knees, back, thighs, hips and buttocks. There is no health risk in having stretch marks. They only form an ugly pattern on the skin.

Causes of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are caused due to many reasons. Some of the most common reasons for having stretch marks are pregnancy, weight lifting, hormone replacement therapy, hormonal changes, etc. There is a myth that stretch marks are due to excessive stretching. This is not completely true. There are several other reasons for stretch marks. Some of the common reasons are given below.

Obesity – It is considered to be one of the most common causes of stretch marks in both men and women. When the body weight is more, then there is a lot of internal stretching which is caused. This will in turn cause the skin to stretch beyond its elasticity which will eventually break. Therefore stretch marks are formed when you are overweight. Stretch marks caused due to obesity are seen on knees, back, upper arm, under arm, thighs etc.

Pregnancy – Most of the women get stretch marks after they deliver or during their pregnancy period. It is obvious that during the pregnancy period women put on lot of weight to support the unborn. When the body gains more than 15kg during pregnancy then there is a high possibility of the person getting stretch marks. Body mass index also plays a major part in detecting the striae.

Hormonal changes – You can observe that lot of teenagers develop stretch marks. This is due to the hormonal change which is seen in the body. During the growing age, glucocorticoid hormone is responsible for curbing the generation of collagen which is the major hormone which gives the epidermis elasticity. This will lead to lack of elasticity in the skin and as they are in the growing ages the skin constantly stretches. This over a period of time will cause striae in them.

Treatment of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are not a permanent change in the body. They tend to disappear over a period of time. Therefore, there is no special treatment which is doctored for striae. Even then, there are cosmetic creams which help you to reduce the stretch marks. Sometimes there is a possibility of completely removing the stretch marks by using these creams regularly.

In a more expensive way, you can treat stretch marks with the help of laser treatment. Most of the dermatologists suggest using cocoa butter cream and massaging on the stretch marks. Cocoa butter helps the skin to rebuild the fiber and elasticity in it.
