History Of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is basically carried out to reshape a nose. Now a days it has become very popular as people have become very conscious about their looks. Models and celebrities regularly go under the knife to make their nose sharper and beautiful. This procedure comes under the category of plastic surgery or aesthetic surgery.

What is Rhinoplasty?

A plastic surgery procedure for constructing the form, restoring functions and aesthetically enhancing the nose is known as Rhinoplasty. It basically means reshaping of nose. The overall criterion is to improve the appearance of a person. It is carried out by correcting nasal trauma, respiratory impediment, congenital defect or a failed primary Rhinoplasty.

History of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty traces a long history. It is believed that Rhinoplasty was first carried out in India by the renowned physician Sushruta in 500 BC. He has described the entire procedure of nasal reconstruction used by him in Sushruta Samhita. This technique continued till the latter half of the eighteenth century. Later on Joseph Carpue described two Rhinoplasty procedures wherein one repaired a nose wounded in battle and another repaired a nose damaged due to arsenic. Slowly and gradually these procedures became very popular when doctors in America and Europe started carrying out these procedures routinely.

In the year 1887, John Orlando Roe performed first Rhinoplasty as we see today. It gained immense popularity during World War I when lots of soldiers opted for this procedure to reshape their nose wounded during the war. Rapid technological advancements were made during this time by the doctors to offer improved services to their customers.

Earlier, only rich and affluent people could afford this procedure but with time not only several advancements have been made in the technique also the price of getting them done has gone sufficiently down. It is a very safe as well as effective procedure.

Types of Rhinoplasty

There are basically two types of Rhinoplasty – Closed Technique and open Technique.

  • Closed Technique is suitable for people who require minor nose reshaping.
  • Small incisions are made by the surgeons in this technique within the nose that helps them to access and expose the bone and the cartilage.
  • Open Technique is needed by those who need major reshaping job on their nose.
  • In Open Rhinoplasty, surgeons make an incision externally on the skin such that the nostrils and are separated and bone and cartilage are assessed carefully.  

Rhinoplasty is really important for people who are constantly conscious about their appearance as it saves them embarrassment.
