What is Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery is a surgery in which surgeons remove the stomach and make it small in order to remove extra calories and nutrients which the body has absorbed and causes obesity. Through surgery, small stomach is made and rest of the stomach is removed and small intestine is attached with the stomach to be bypassed. In simple terms bariatric surgery is done to remove obesity. Mainly this surgery is done for prevention and treatment of overweight. When the person eats a lot then his eating and digestive capacity will increase. Although he doesn’t want to eat but because of his increased stomach he is bound to eat something. It is commonly known as weight loss surgery.

History of Bariatric Surgery

In 1954, Dr. A.J. Kremen first examines the Bariatric Surgery in which he connects his small intestine with stomach by removing extra portion of stomach. In 1963 Drs. Payne, DeWind continued with the procedure. In 1973 there was a great success in the field of Gastric bypass surgery. In 1990 gastric band was involved. But now this surgery has become popular and people are availing its benefits.

Bariatric Surgery Purpose 

This procedure is mainly done by giving general anaesthesia in the abdomen. In this surgery either surgeon place gastric band after reducing the size of the stomach or they remove a portion of stomach or they do gastric bypass surgery. In these surgery surgeon reduces the size of stomach equal to an egg or a thumb. When food reaches the stomach after all the procedure then it will absorb less calories and nutrients because of small stomach. In this operation person feel less hungry and therefore it restricts him from taking excessive calories and gives the feeling of satisfaction in his new small stomach.

Types of Bariatric Surgery

There are 5 types of Bariatric Surgery:-

Gastric Bypass

In this type stomach is made small by separating the excess one from the other. The small part of stomach is then attached with the small intestine and therefore it absorbs less calories and fats.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

In this surgery only the stomach is given the shape like the shape of the banana. The surgeon does not touch the intestine in this procedure.

Adjustable Gastric Banding

In this surgery surgeon does not cut the stomach to make it small. They simply place the band through laparoscopic in the stomach which can be tightened or left loose according to the wish of the patient.

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty

This type of surgery is the combination of both gastric bypass and gastric banding. After the procedure of surgery patient has two stomach one small other is big. Surgeon staples the upper portion of the stomach to make it small so that food nutrients should be less absorbed

Biliopancreatic Bypass with a Duodenal Switch

This is said to be very complex type of surgery. In this surgeon removes the lower side of the stomach making it like a sleeve. Then it is connected with the small intestine for further procedure.
