What is Artificial Insemination

Artificial Insemination is a process in which sperms of the male partner is inserted in the uterus of the female partner. It is mainly done for the purpose of getting the pregnancy which is not possible through natural procedure. In most cases where male partner sperms are not able to cause pregnancy there sperms from the sperm donor is used. Insemination is mostly done when woman is most fertile about 24 to 48 hours before ovulation is expected. In this Artificial Insemination only good quality of sperm are used for increasing the chances of fertility.

History of Artificial Insemination

Today Artificial Insemination is getting popular because patients are really getting successful results. Earlier this insemination was done on animals in order to increase the quantity of dairy cattle’s and pigs etc. In 1780 Spallanzani in Italy found impregnated dog through semen. About 1900, Professor Ivanov experimented it on horses. By 1933 he started collecting the semen and experimented it on horses, cattle, sheep and swine. After that numbers of artificial insemination tests were done on number of cows. After achieving success in this field it has-been experimented in humans

Purpose of Artificial Insemination

The main purpose of Artificial Insemination is causing the pregnancy through artificial way where there are many factors which hinder in causing pregnancy naturally. Mostly woman prefer this option where they don’t have male partners or partner who has infertility. In this procedure only washed sperms after removing all the harmful chemicals are used in the laboratory. Then they monitor woman’s menstrual cycle through different tests and ultra sounds. When ovulation is about to start they insert good quality of sperms in the uterus of the woman which increases the chances of fertility and if woman conceives this means procedure is completed successfully.

Types of Artificial Insemination

There are four types of insemination:-

Intracervical Insemination

This type of insemination is good for those couples where there is no problem in any other place. No problem in cervical mucus, or in ovulation of the woman. Only sperms are injected in or near cervix and fertilization take place.

Intrauterine Insemination

In this type of insemination sperms are taken either from the partner or from the donor and then sperms are inserted directly in to the uterus without any pain.

Intravaginal Insemination

In this type of insemination sperms are taken from the container and then simply inserted in the vagina of the woman through syringe without any further procedure.

Intratubal Insemination

In this type of insemination sperms are inserted in the fallopian tubes as there is the problem in ovulation or in the mucus of the woman through which she is not able to conceive. This can be done through laparoscopic surgery. In this surgery a cut is made in the abdomen and then camera is placed and then after locating in the tubes sperms are then inserted in the tubes. After conceiving this surgery is said to be a successful surgery.
