Valerian:

This is the active ingredient present in the roots of the herb Valeriana officinalis, commonly called garden heliotrope. This herb is a perennial plant that is well known for its sweet smelling flowers. The active component is valeric acid obtained from extracts of the roots, that has proven sedative and anxiolytic properties. Its effect is instant and hence small dosages are recommended.

Green tea:

It is found to be abundant in an amino acid called L-theanine which is a proven anxiolytic. Once absorbed by brain cells, the L-theanine stimulates the production of dopamine and serotonin that are keys to relaxation. Avoid using these with other antidepressants including beverages containing caffeine and alcohol. The side-effects of such usage is said to be severe.

Passion flower:

The botanical name for this plant is Passiflora incarnate. The active ingredient here is its alkaloid extract from the leaves and roots that has proven anxiolytic properties. Hence it is used to treat mild anxiety and restlessness.

St. John’s wort:

This is herb worth mentioning when it comes to treating depression. The extract is obtained from leaves and flowers of Hypericum perforatum, a very common hedgerow plant. It is grown commercially and available as tea bags, capsules and tinctures.

The normal blood pressure for an adult is placed at 120/80 mmHg. When the pressure exerted by blood on the blood vessels is higher than this it is called high blood pressure. To overcome or reverse this condition one has to make basic lifestyle changes in addition to medication. Herbal remedies for high BP are:

Garlic:

The garlic pod when consumed raw is known to reduce cholesterol and hence blood pressure.

Hawthorn:

Is another herb whose tea and dried extracts of leaves are known to aid the functioning to kidneys in removing excess water from around the heart, thus regulating heart beat.

Olive leaves:

contain oleuropein which reduces blood pressure by reducing the cholesterol levels.

Ginseng:

They help in the absorption of oxygen and thus reduce toxicity in the blood.
