Hemodialysis Precautions

Hemodialysis Precautions

For successful and comfortable hemodialysis procedure, certain precautions need to be taken before and after hemodialysis. Given below are a few of the precautions which can be taken to make the entire process less of an ordeal to the patient, with minimum chances of side-effects.

Precautions Before Hemodialysis

Before carrying out hemodialysis the following precautions should be taken:

  • A complete medical examination should be undertaken giving a comprehensive medical background of the patient.
  • Blood and urine tests will have to be taken.
  • Surgery may be required if an arteriovenous fistula or graft is to be installed.
  • Needle fear factor: This is a common condition where there is an excessive phobia of needles. If this is the case with a patient who is about to undergo hemodialysis, then therapy needs to be administered to reduce this well before the hemodialysis is done.

Precautions After Hemodialysis

There are a few precautions to be taken after hemodialysis has been carried out:

  • Hygiene is one of the first and foremost conditions to maintain. All personnel who touch the patient or the equipment should wash their hands thoroughly.
  • Standard precautions should be maintained when personnel are exposed to body fluids or the blood of the patient.
  • Protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, masks and gowns should be used as required.
  • Care should be taken that the arterial and venous sites are maintained properly and kept clean and aseptic for the next hemodialysis session.

Recovery from Hemodialysis

Patients who have undergone hemodialysis suffer from several effects of the process which are physical, psychological, and social in nature. The quality of life gets impacted, not only for the patient, but also for the family.
Depression and fatigue are among the most likely symptoms to show during the recovery stage of hemodialysis. Whether the dialysis is done at home or outside, there is a likelihood of depression and fatigue. Therefore corrective therapy should be undertaken, like psychotherapy and medication with a doctor’s prescription.

This aspect of the recovery process after hemodialysis should not be neglected. Today there are several forums on the internet and rehabilitation centers in and around dialysis units where patients can get support during the recovery process.

Hemodialysis can be made more comfortable and easy for the patient, if the above measures are taken. This will result in an overall success of the process of hemodialysis for achieving the desired results.
