What are Health Supplements?

Health supplements are also referred to as dietary supplements or nutritional supplements. They usually contain a combination of Vitamins, minerals, herbs , antioxidants, amino acids and enzymes. They are taken to fortify the diet. Remember, health supplements are not meant to prevent, cure, or treat diseases.

When should we take Health Supplements?

We ought to get all the vitamins and minerals we need by following a balanced diet. However, if our diet is lacking in any way, then we should takehealth supplements to make up for the deficiencies. There are also periods in life when we need to take more health supplements, for example, pregnancy, lactation, growing children, elderly people, etc. Your doctor may also prescribe health supplements to help you get over some disease or ailment, for example, iron for anemia, or calcium for joint pains.

Side Effects of Health Supplements:

Even though health supplements may be labeled ‘natural’ this does not mean that they cannot cause harm. Taking too much or for too long without professional guidance will easily cause an overdose. Many people ‘stack’ or combine supplements, especially athletes and bodybuilders, without knowing the potency of these combinations. Some of them can be deadly and affect vital organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys. Headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, blurred vision, joint pains, etc. are some of the symptoms that can result from taking health supplements that are not suited to you. Always test to see how your body reacts to them as many people can be allergic to them.

Recommended Dosage for Health Supplements:

Health supplements have no set dosage. The dosage differs from one person to another and depends on food habits and lifestyle. Always consult a doctor before taking health supplements.

Precautions about Health Supplements:

  • Health supplements are not regulated by the regular drug controlling authorities in the same way as prescription drugs or foods. Thus they may not be standard and may differ from batch to batch or brand to brand.
  • Be sure to take note of the brand names and the ingredients listed on the bottle or pack.
  • See that you always follow the instructions and dont take more than what is recommended.
  • Do not take them beyond the recommended time.
  • Make sure that you use only health supplements of reputed brands and do not start taking them unless you do plenty of research on them or take the advice of a health professional.
