The though of having a fungal infection seems to be extremely repulsive. Nobody appreciates the thought but our external environment is such that skin is always exposed to harmful elements that can expedite the occurrence of an infection. Sometimes the fungi are not neutral or harmless and cause infections. It is a myth that fungal infections are normally seen in young children. In fact children are just as prone to acquiring an infection as adults. There are many types of fungal infections which show different symptoms and can be treated. On the whole, one common symptom for a fungal infection is itching and reddening of the skin in the affected area.
Types of Fungal Infections of the Skin
- Tinea versicolor is one unique form of fungal infection as it does not cause a lot of unbearable itching but it is a fungal infection of the skin nonetheless. The fungus which causes this infection is centered on the part of the body which has oil secreting glands. Thus, this infection is mostly seen in teenagers who develop oily skin and acne due to hormonal imbalance and people with oily skin in general. This infection only affects the outermost layer of the skin and does not penetrate deep inside the skin.
- Jock Itch is another form of fungal infection which is fairly common between sport players and has been named rightly so. This does not mean that other people are safe from it. In fact this kind of infection is probably the most common amongst people. This infection affects the skin in the groin area. This part is mostly enclosed and is moist and damp due to sweat and absence of ventilation. This fungal infection can cause terrible embarrassment to the afflicted person as they cannot help but itch. But public embarrassment is the least of their worries as serious cases of jock itch would mean that the person will find it too painful to even walk as it will cause a lot of pain and the skin might even tear up in places. It is better to get this kind of a fungal infection treated as soon as possible. One can get a prescription of creams and lotions which help in getting rid of the infection and avoid one by staying clean and using anti fungal powder and wear clean clothes.
- People have a common misconception that Athlete’s foot is restricted to sportspersons and hence the name. It is a fungal infection which usually strikes because people do not maintain healthy and clean feet hygiene. If a person fails to wash their feet when dirty and wear socks without drying the feet first or wearing wet/unclean socks for a long period of time then they can get athlete’s foot. This too causes a lot of itching but this particular infection does not strike the entire foot but crevices between the toes as they have a lot of moisture trapped in between them. The skin starts to break up and in some cases white liquid oozes out of the cracks. Proper treatment for this infection includes an array of creams and lotions which dry out the cracks. Dusting powder for the feet is a good idea in order to keep the infection away.
- There are different types of ringworm infections like ringworm of the scalp, ringworm of the beard etc. Ringworm can be caused by different types of fungi if they get the suitable environment on the skin. This type of fungal infection is also pretty common and is contagious like most of the other fungal infections. The good thing is that ringworms are easy to cure with topical creams and lotions.
