Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) or otherwise known as “Oligofructose” or “Oligofructan” is mainly used as an alternate sweetener. It contributes to about 30 – 50 percent of the commercially made syrups. This ingredient was first used in 1980 and continued after that following the demand for a healthier food diet with less calories. These carbohydrates are found in certain plants such as - “Jerusalem Artichokes”, “Onions”, “Bananas”, “Soybeans”and “Asparagus”. All the products that contain FOS are carefully manufactured in the U.S.
Fructooligosaccharides can be used as a sweetening agent, flavor enhancer and bulking agent which is very advantageous. FOS is also considered as a low-calorie sucrose-replacement and is even used in certain Japanese health foods to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. It is also considered as a supplement for preventing yeast related infections. It is said to act as a non-digestible fiber in ones diet. It increases the amount of beneficial bacterias in the lower intestine making it easier to obtain all the essential nutritions and benefiting the detoxification and elimination of the not needed elements. It even helps largely for the Immune system.
The supplement is said to generate growth of various bacterial organism in the body that are not considered healthy for the human body. It stimulates the growth of “Klebsiella” and possibly other pathogenic bacterias that have said to be associated with the autoimmune disease “Ankylosing Spondylitis”. Another draw back to FOS is that the stability of it is very poor. FOS is largely a sugar derived supplement, therefore people with a yeast infection should avoid taking it. It is most likely to cause an increase in gas, abdominal discomfort and bloating if taken in large amount.
The average dosage for an adult is around 5 – 10 grams a day. But in certain cases depending on the individual, the portions do vary since the supplement tend to react differently for different individuals. Hence it is advised to check with the doctor before taking a certain dosage.
