What is Dry Hair?

Dry hair is caused because of lack of moisture in the hair strands and also due to lack of humectants and lipids. Dry hair is mainly the result of the inactive oil glands on the scalp. • Chemical damage caused by perming, coloring, or bleaching the hair or even excessive shampooing
• Some people tend to have hair that is naturally very dry; this may be due to lack of fat or lipids in the diet. Dry hair is also caused by harsh weather conditions.

Top Three Dry Hair Care Home Remedies


Nothing can be as nourishing as a warm oil massage, preferably with warm almond oil, coconut oil or olive oil. Also, you can make fantastic nourishing oil at home itself with 4 almonds crushed and added to half a cup of coconut oil. Heat the oil in a pan until it steams. Set aside to cool down a bit. Apply when it is still warm. Massage deep into the scalp and into roots of your hair. After you have massaged your hair thoroughly, wrap a warm towel around your head and leave it on for half an hour. You can shampoo your hair after that.


This is an excellent pack for dry hair. For making this pack, you have to mash two ripe bananas and then half cup beaten curd to it. This is an excellent moisturizing pack for your scalp. You can apply it on your scalp and even to the hair strands. Pile up your hair high over your head in a top knot after you have applied this mixture all over. Shampoo off as usual after leaving for 15-30 minutes. After you wash your hair, you will be able to feel the difference in your hair texture yourself.

EGG TONIC Will Retain Dry Hair Vitamin

For making this excellent egg tonic for your hair, beat up an egg in a cup of milk (you can also use yogurt) and add the juice of one lemon to the mixture. Now add a teaspoon of pure coconut oil (or olive oil to it) and massage it into your hair nicely. Wrap a warm and moist towel around your head and leave for about an hour. Rinse thoroughly after that. Wash your head with lime juice and warm water after you have shampooed your hair. This acts as a natural conditioner.

Some Other Useful Solutions

  • You should always remember that dry hair tends to be very fragile. When you are shampooing, gently lather your hair. Also avoid any pulling or yanking. Also avoid scrubbing with your fingernails.
  • Never brush your hair when it is wet.
  • You should dry your hair naturally rather than using your hair-dryer. If you must use it, do it on a cooler temperature and aim it down the hair shaft.
  • Do not wash your hair too often. Once every four days is fine if you have very dry hair. Remember, overwashing your hair will only aggravate the problem.
  • Use a deep conditioner after you wash your hair. Better to use shampoos that are mild and especially labeled "for dry or damaged hair." Mayonnaise is an excellent natural conditioner. You can leave it for 15-20 minutes before washing it out.
  • Avoid the use of heated appliances and steer clear of perming or coloring and chemicals like hairspray, mousse, hair gels and styling creams.
  • Snip off the frayed ends once every six weeks.
  • If you are going out for a party, remember, beer is a very good setting lotion for dry hair. It also adds a healthy sheen to your mane. You can spray it on the damp hair before you blow-dry.
  • If you cannot avoid going out in the sun, wear a scarf or hat and use a hair sunscreen.
  • Last, but not the least, keep your body healthy. Drink plenty of water and a balanced diet comprising of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins A, C, E, and calcium.
