Dandruff can simply be defined as a condition where dead skin cells Shedd off from the head in a faster rate. Dandruff is also known as Pityriasis simplex capillitti or scurf. It is quite normal to shed dead cells produced as a result of skin renewal. Our body sheds dead cells daily in a particular rate which is generally not easily visible. But in some abnormal condition, the dead skin cells sheds off in excess rate which results in the production of large visible silvery flakes. This condition marks the presence of dandruff. The excess shedding of dead cells are as a result of faster renewal of skin cells.

There are mainly two types of dandruff; they are the dry dandruff and the wet dandruff. Oily dandruff is usually seen in people with oily skin and oily scalp and on the other hand dry dandruff is seen in people with dry scalp.

Severe Dandruff Causes

The two most common symptoms of dandruff are:

Scaling: The excess dead cells on the scalp will turn out into white large flakes attached to the scalp which gradually falls of to the hair strands, then to the shoulders, eyebrows, etc. This is the type of symptom seen in people with dry scalp. However, people with oily scalp the dandruff will not fall off so easily, they turns out into greasy particle after mixing up with the sebum or oil secreted by the underlying sebaceous gland and remain adhered to the scalp.

Itching: The scaling is often accompanied by an itchy sensation. Due to this itchy sensation, we will naturally have a tendency to scratch the scalp. The scratching may lead to scalp damage that mostly facilitates a secondary infection.

Acne due to Dandruff: People who are having dandruff will have pimples on their face especially on the forehead, neck and shoulders. Dandruff causes flaky skin on the scalp and these dry skin flakes can block the pores on the face and body leading to pimples

Treatment for Dandruff

The most disappointing fact is that there is no cure for dandruff. Once you get it, it will continue through the life. But the severity of dandruff is possible to be kept under control through proper treatment. The dandruff treatment is carried out depending on the age and severity of the condition. The treatment mainly targets towards slowing down of skin renewal. Dandruff could be controlled to a great extent with the use of anti dandruff shampoos. In summer protect your hair from sun. Apply deep conditioner to protect your hair and during the summer, you may wash your hair frequently to remove sweat.

There are several types of medicated shampoos available today that are effective in controlling the dandruff. If possible try to remove the visible flakes as much as possible before applying the shampoo. This helps in increasing the effectiveness of treatment. In the initial stage a treatment, try to find out which shampoo is effective for you. Once an effective shampoo is found out, shampoo your hair every alternate day until the dandruff gets controlled after which the you can reduce the frequency of shampooing.  Allow the shampoo to remain on the head for at least five minutes to ensure sufficient time for shampoos action. The most common antifungal ingredients found in such shampoos are:

  • Ketoconazole- this is one of the most widely used anti- fungal agent to control the dandruff. This can be used by both young and elderly individuals.
  • Salicylic Acid- This is an effective agent in removing the dead cells from the scalp. It does not reduce the skin replenishment rate but instead is an affective cleansing agent. Most of the dandruff control shampoos have salicylic acid as the ingredient. But rarely in some patients, the excess use Salicylic acid containing products may lead to dryness of the scalp that intern results in further flaking.
  • Selenium Sulfide- Selenium sulfide is another major ingredient used in antifungal shampoos to get an effective result
  • Zinc pyrithione- Zinc pyrithione is another major ingredient found in most of the anti-dandruff shampoos. It is an effective antifungal agent.
  • Coal tar- The coal tar has an effective natural antifungal agent. But the long term use of coal tar containing product may stain you hair. So take special care if you had under gone hair treatments like dying, coloring, bleaching etc.

Essential Oils to get rid of Dandruff

  • Tea tree oil- Tea tree oil is obtained from Melaleuca altimifolia which is commonly known as Australian tea tree. It is one of the most widely used anti dandruff ingredients. Tea tree oil is an effective antiseptic, anti biotic and ant fungal agent.
  • Rosemary oil- Rosemary oil is an essential oil to treat dandruff, it has the properties like antifungal and antibacterial, that can fight with dandruff and improve your scalp.
  • Lavender oil- It is also one of the best oil to treat dandruff. Add 2 tbsp of coconut oil to 20-22 drops of lavender oil, then apply on scalp and massage gently. By using shower cap cover your hair for 30 minutes then wash it using mild shampoo.
  • Peppermint oil- It is a best cooling oil. It is used to reduce redness, irritation and itchiness of your scale.
  • Chamomile oil- It is one of the essential mild smoothing oil and also used to get rid of dandruff.
  • Eucalyptus oil- It contains antifungal and antibacterial agent, which helps to get rid of all kinds of scalp problems.
  • Lemon oil- It is used to reduce dandruff and scalp flakes, removes sebum and also a very effective natural antibacterial treatment. This oil will works quickly on dandruff compared to other essential oils. Which is very helpful in winter season to get rid of dandruff.

Natural Home Remedies for Dandruff Treatment

There are lots of ways through which you can control the dandruff yourself by using some natural ingredients. Find out which one is more effective for you and follow it regularly to get an effective result. Following are some of the most important herbal home remedies:

  • Apply egg yolk to your scalp and allow it to stay for 20 to 25 minutes and then wash it properly using lukewarm water.
  • Soak fenugreek seeds in water overnight and grind it into paste in the next morning. Apply this paste to your scalp and allow it to stand for 30 minutes. Wash it off using mild shampoos.
  • Mix lime juice with coconut milk. Apply this mixture to your scalp and allow it to stand for 30 minutes. Rinse it off using lukewarm water.
  • Mix two table spoons of green gram powder with one cup of curd. Apply this to remain on your scalp for at least 30 minutes. Wash it thoroughly using lukewarm water.
  • Massage your scalp for about half an hour with a mixture made with lemon juice and goose berry juice. Do this before going to bed and wash it off in the morning.
  • Keep on a cup of curd for three days and then apply this curd on to your scalp and massage well for about 30 minutes.
  • Fusion of apple cider vinegar and water can also help you get rid of dandruff. It restore the pH level balance of scalp.
  • Add half cup of white vinegar to two cups of water. Rinse it after shampooing your hair.
