Cataract can make an obstacle from slight to complete cloudiness in the eye and for which the sufferer gets the obstruction of the passage of light which results in blindness. Cataracts normally advance gradually and it affects vision loss and sometimes causes complete blindness. In cataract, both the eyes get affected but it has been seen that always one eye is affected earlier than the other. However, the occurrence of the cataract is normal for elderly people but in some case it can affect young people too. Cataract can cause severe inflammation in the lens of the eye that results phacomorphic glaucoma. There are still some of the notions prevailing in the rural areas that cataract is caused because of heavenly curse but these are the superstitions and now cataract can be treated and removed from eye permanently. The name of the disease comes from the Latin language as it means ‘waterfall’.  In the ancient time, the Persian physician called the ‘cataract’ as ‘nazul-i-ah,’ which means ‘descent of the water’.

The most common treatment is making an open phase into the capsule of the cloudy lens and that can be done in a simple surgical method. Two types of surgeries are available to treat cataract and these are namely extra-capsular which is clinically called as extracapsular cataract extraction, or ECCE and intra-capsular which is clinically termed as intracapsular cataract extraction, or ICCE; both the treatments are very helpful and have quick result.

Doctors usually remove the lens by leaving the majority of the lens capsule intact in extra-capsular surgery. On the other hand, doctors remove the entire lens of the eye, including the lens capsule in intra-capsular surgery.
