Bone marrow biopsy is a simple process of taking out the sample from bone where blood cells are formed, through a long needle which is meant for this purpose only. This biopsy helps in detecting several diseases like anaemia, cancer, infection in blood, any genetic disease etc.

Bone Marrow Biopsy Precaution

Though the procedure of biopsy of bone marrow is simple and does not requires much time, even then some of the precautions should be taken from safety point of view because it is well said that precaution is better than cure.

Before Bone Marrow Biopsy

  1. Patient should first get the detailed knowledge through books, professionals, website what procedure is going to be applied on him. This will help him to increase confidence towards the process of biopsy.

  2. The patient should take the full knowledge of the process because there are many medium that are there fool the innocent.

  3. Doctors should make a check that all the equipments and devices are available that are used in the process of bone marrow biopsy.

  4. Obese patient should avoid of aspiration biopsy since their skin is fatty and there arises a vast difficulty in finding a bone at place. For them radiation therapy is best.

  5. The procedure of biopsy is performed by special haematologist or pathologists who are given special training. 

After Bone Marrow Biopsy

  1. Mainly bone marrow biopsy is done by puncturing the skin through needle so sometimes patient can hurt some nerves or vein by the needle.

  2. Patient may have pain in that site from where the sample is taken but it is only for few days. In case of excess of pain then patient should consult to the doctor for some pain reliever. Sometimes patient can feel the swelling in that area, the patient should apply ice on it or in major case doctor recommendation is required.

  3. Patient should experience abnormal bleeding from that site; in this case doctor recommendation is required.

  4. Patient may have fever at irregular intervals, or have infection in that area, or forms pus then he /she should visit to the doctor without any delay.

  5. Sometimes patient gets allergic to anaesthesia and some allergies like rashes on chest, hair loss, etc. Treatment is essential for these allergies.

Bone Marrow Biopsy Recovery

The recovery of bone marrow biopsy is fast but sometimes complication arises according to person to person. Generally in bone marrow biopsy, local anaesthesia is given to numb that area only. Hence person does not have to go for long procedure as in general anaesthesia. After the procedure the affected area is cleaned and dry bandage is put on that area and patient is asked to lie down until bleeding stops. Then patient’s pulse, breathing, blood pressure, and temperature are monitored. Patient is sent home immediately after the anaesthesia effect is over. He can actively start his normal activities accept driving, cooking etc for a day or a two.
