Best Options of Body Hair Removal

Body Hair is a natural phenomenon that occurs in both men and women at the onset of puberty.  Hair is found all over the human body except the lips, palms, soles of the feet.  Men generally tend to have more body hair than women and have more growth on the face, chest and back areas. Common areas of hair growth are:

  • head,
  • eyebrows and lashes,
  • underarms,
  • legs and
  • Pubic area.

Hair removal has been practised across the world for centuries and for a number of reasons – medical, cultural, religious and sexual.  The methods vary from region to region and also with time – shaving is the most common method.  Of course, different cultures have different social norms regarding hair maintenance and removal.

Hair Removal Practices by Gender

For Men: Body hair removal methods are different for men and women – men tend to shave their faces and heads and underarms to some extent.  Men with a lot of body hair are likely to get the hair waxed or removed by other methods for comfort.

For Women: In quite a few Western countries, having and exposing body hair other than on the head, eyebrows and eyelashes is considered undesirable and unaesthetic.  With clothing styles changing all the time, short dresses, pants and swimsuits mandate the practice of getting rid of unwanted body hair.  Most women shave their legs, underarms and their bikini lines.  It is now becoming more common to remove pubic hair for reasons such as aesthetics, comfort and sexual reasons.

In many eastern cultures, it is a religious mandate to get body hair removed by various methods.  Shaving of the head is common in some Buddhist, Hindu and Christian traditions.  In any case, hair removal is common around the world and women are the biggest proponents and practitioners of hair removal.  Some women many also have issues of too much hair and some of the methods used are:

  • Tweezing
  • Threading
  • Waxing
  • Depilatory creams
  • Shaving
  • Electrolysis
  • Laser Treatments

Except for electrolysis and laser treatments, all the other hair removal methods are impermanent.  Hair grows back and has to be removed after a period of 4- 6 weeks.  People are always looking for newer and better methods of hair removal – it is definitely a big business here to stay as long as there are people with unwanted hair.
