A new born baby needs to be protected from various external elements which might do him harm. In fact all infants need to be protected from such elements. Another reason for paying more attention towards skin care in the case of babies is that it is one of the most exposed and underdeveloped organ in a baby. The membrane of the skin at the infantile stage is extremely thin and needs to be nourished properly. As it is underdeveloped the skin of a baby is more prone to infections, rashes or other problems due to some products etc. Adequate skin care at the childhood stage would mean that the child will have healthy skin throughout his childhood.

Ways of Ensuring Baby Skin Care

  • The market is flooded with products pertaining to baby skin care. The trick is to choose the right product which satisfies the needs of the baby. Recently it has been proved that some of the baby care products might actually end up doing more harm than good. Baby powder for example can prove to be pretty harmful to  babies and in some cases even lead to cancer. The prime reason behind the use of baby powder of any kind is to get rid of diaper rash. The baby powder is also applied in areas such as underarms, groin, back, neck etc. The idea behind this to prevent rash but many a times parents end up using talcum powder or baby powder which has all the ingredients used to make talcum powder. It is best to use scent free organic powder like cornstarch for example.
  • Many people use oil to massage a baby as they believe that using oil would lead to the baby developing soft and healthy skin. This is true to a certain extent. Massaging the body of a baby with oil does moisturize the skin to a great extent and all the nutrients go deeper than artificial skin care products. Oils also help greatly in dissipating any irritation being caused to the skin. Sometimes babies have one or two mosquito bites when taken outdoors and these bites can cause a lot of irritation to the skin and leave blemishes for a few days but applying oil on it makes it much better. To get the best results it is always advisable to use natural products and no other oil works better than Aloe and Chamomile.
  • Many parents think that using soap keeps their infants clean and away from diseases. In the case of soaps and shampoos or any other cleaning agent in general, it is very important to study the list of ingredients used to make the product and choose an organic product over an artificial soap or shampoo. Usually soap is not even needed but if parents insist then they can use a mild natured soap with some kind of oil like coconut or palm oil in it. This way the soap does not cause a lot of irritation to the delicate skin of the baby. Another reason to use a mild soap or a mild shampoo is that the parents do not want some of these products to sink in the deeper tissues of the skin and cause trouble. Calendula is an example of natural ingredient that can be used to bathe babies. Bubble baths however are a strict no-no for the kids. Kids might look cute while taking a bubble bath but that level of exposure of the skin to soap causes a lot of trouble. Bubble baths are known to cause urinary tract infections among children.
