Acid Reflux Home Remedies

Acid reflux is also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The symptoms are quite similar to acid refluxs. This is a common problem and people suffering from it, have constant acid reflux for more than two days in a week. Though this is a common problem, if it gets serious it can lead to reflux of stomach acid and damage the lining of the esophagus.

Acid reflux leads to further complications like scar tissue which can make swallowing of food a difficult process.  Below are a few common symptoms of acid reflux:

Apple Cider Vinegar- A very good home remedy to cure acid reflux is apple cider vinegar. Though it may sound a little weird to drink this acid to cure acid reflux, but there are good acid and harmful acid. Therefore apple cider vinegar comes under good acid. Take ½ glass of water and mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. While eating dinner, sip this mixture as this provides instant relief.

Ginger Root- Ginger root is known to be one of the best herbs to cure stomach acidity. Along with providing relief, it also calms the nerves. Ginger root is available in the form of capsules in many drug stores. Take one capsule after dinner every day to cure acid reflux.

Fennel Seeds- Fennel seeds are natural herbs that provide instant relief from acid reflux. It also helps in digesting the food as well as other benefits. Anethole is a compound that is present in fennel seeds which helps in suppressing gastrointestinal tract spasms. Take half teaspoon of fennel seeds with warm water or you can even chew them after dinner.

Lavender Tea with Anise- Lavender tea is one of the best home remedy to cure acid reflux. It reduces the acid in the stomach and prevents acid refluxs. Take some lavender and aniseeds in equal proportions. Boil 2 ½ cup of water and pour this water in a teaspoon of mixture. Allow the tea to sit for 5 minutes. After it cools a little, strain the tea and add a teaspoon of honey in it. This herbal tea should be had in the morning and evening to prevent acid reflux.   

What causes Acid Reflux

There is no particular cause for acid reflux. However a few common causes are listed below:

  • Drinking beverages like soda or bubbly beverages
  • Smoking
  • Eating large portions of meals
  • Antidepressants and sedatives
  • Alcohol
  • Diseases like mixed connective tissue and scleroderma weaken the esophageal muscle.
  • Eating lots of greasy food, fatty and fried foods
  • Stress
  • Going to bed right after eating
  • Elevated hormone levels during pregnancy
  • Slow emptying of the stomach

All the above problems are the cause of acid reflux in the body. Therefore to prevent yourself from going through this, take required precautions and follow the above home remedies.
