History

Continental Assurance Company of North America was first founded in the year 1897 at Detroit. It started with main aim just to provide railroad industry employees with accident as well as health insurance. Later CNA has merged with another American accident company known as Metropolitan Accident Company, which then renamed to Continental Casualty Company also moved its location to Chicago.

This company has acquitted two other insurance companies in the years 1956, 1963 which were respectively National Fire Insurance Company and American Casualty Company. It was then given name as CNA. While in the years 1999, 2004 it sold personal insurance division to Allstate and Group benefits to Hartford respectively.

It ranks 8th in United States as a commercial insurer and 13th has a property and casualty insurer. Present CEO of CNA is Thomas F. Motamed.
