Cheap Health Insurance in California

Even though the percentage of people suffering from obesity, diabetes and poverty are on the rise, California has gone up in its healthy rank. California has reasonably high level of air pollution and high percentage of noninsured. Every resident of California must have some form of health coverage. Those Californians who are not covered by their employers must have individual insurance or use one of the government programs to get cheap health insurance in California.

Healthy and high-income level Californians have several private insurance providers to choose their cover from. If pre-existing conditions and affordability are deterring people from being insured, the California government has some programs to help them.

Medi-Cal

The Medicaid of California, Medi-Cal, offers health care to seniors, disabled, children, pregnant care, children in foster care, and individuals suffering from breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and TB. These people need to come from low-income families and meet few other criteria to qualify for Medi-Cal.

Healthy Families

Children who are under 19 and are not eligible for Medi-Cal can get low-cost coverage through the Healthy Families program. Even children born to women who are part of the AIM program (discussed below) can qualify for this. This insurance covers dental, health, specialist visits and vision.

California Kids

The California Kids program is a non-profit program supported by foundations, individuals and businesses. The program covers children (2-18) for health maintenance, physical services, outpatient services, ambulance services, emergency care, vision, dental and prescription drugs.

Access for Infants & Mothers (AIM)

Uninsured pregnant women with middle level income can get cheap health insurance in California through the AIM program. The cost of the cover would be calculated as 1.5% of the insured’s Adjusted Annual Household Income. The eligibility criteria include,

  • Pregnant (less than 30 weeks pregnant) women
  • California resident
  • Not availing Medicare (Part A/B) or free Medi-Cal
  • Uninsured
  • Fall under AIM income limit

The coverage under AIM is effective up to 2 months after the birth of the child.

Major Risk Medical Insurance Program

Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP) covers individuals who are uninsurable by the private market due to pre-existing conditions. Small part of the premium is payable by the individuals and the government covers the remaining part.

Californians should first try their insurability with the private insurance providers to get good health coverage. If they are not insurable or cannot afford any cover that way, they can check their eligibility for one of the above options for cheap health insurance in California.
