Typhus is a disease caused by bacteria and they are two types, termed as endemic and epidemic. Which is similar to Rickettsia bacteria. Typhus is name taken from greek typhus. It is type of smoky or hazy, which describes status of the patient caused by this disease. It is a casual organism rickettsia, which is a force parasite bacterium that cannot live for long outer surface living cells. We should never confuse with typhoid fever. While typhoid is a different disease and caused by unlike species of bacteria.

Signs and Symptoms

Epidemic Typhus

  • Back pain
  • Chills
  • Delirium
  • High fever (40 °C or 104 °F)
  • Joint pain
  • Low blood pressure
  • Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
  • Rashes
  • Severe headaches
  • Severe muscle pain

Murine Typhus

  • Abdominal pain
  • Backache
  • Red rash causes found in the middle of the body and spread all over.
  • Extremely high fever (41 °C or 105–106 °F)
  • Hacking, dry cough
  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Vomiting


The causes of  typhus  may include:

  • Condition:  Epidemic typhus; 

Bacteria:  Rickettsia prowazekii 
Arthropod:  Lice on humans;  

  • Condition:  Murine typhus or "endemic typhus"  

Bacteria:  Rickettsia typhi
Arthropod:  Fleas on rats

  • Condition:  Scrub typhus

Bacteria:  Orientia tsutsugamushi.;
Arthropod:  Harvest mites on humans or rodents.  

  • Condition:  Queensland tick typhus[3] or "Australian tick typhus" (and a spotted fever[4]).

Bacteria:  Rickettsia australis. 
Arthropod:  Ticks


To prevent typhus, inoculate with the typhus vaccine series before going areas such as endemic and to keep away from contact with parasites.

Prognosis and Treatment of Typhus

The patient with late, undiagnosed or untreated typhus has a smaller amount promising prediction, but the type prognosis is related, for example, the 10 to 60 percent of people death may occur due to the treated not given on time and highest risk to patients over age of 60.The two percent of patients may die with murine typhus disease of untreated patients.  The most efficient treatment to this cure disease is to have treatment on time with antibiotics
