Palindromic Rheumatism is a form of inflammatory arthritis in which patient gets attack of joint pain and inflammation. It is also called as palindromic arthritis. As the name says palindromic which means same as forward and backward, in the same way the attack begins and ends and gets worst during the middle stage.
Though it’s a rare disease, exact causes are still under the research. However the studies till date have concluded that when inflammatory cells move into the lining of the joint, it causes inflammation, redness, swelling and the production of extra fluid which is similar like when we get any cut or wound. It can occur to both men and women of any age.
Sudden and rapidly developing attacks of joint pain and swelling, redness in those joints, their temporary disability and recurring of attacks on those joints are the symptoms of Palindromic Rheumatism. Though it occurs typically in hands and feet but it may occur in any joint.
There are no specific tests for Palindromic Rheumatism. So the diagnosis done by doctors is based on the symptoms told by the patient. After the examination based on the symptoms, blood tests like ESR C-reactive are undertaken to check the raised levels of inflammation during the attack. Various other blood tests and x-rays are done to check the damage done to the joints.
There are different types of drugs available for the treatment of Palindromic Rheumatism. These types of drugs are Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid injections and disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are used to reduce pain and inflammation during the attacks. Steroid injections are used to bring fast relief to an inflamed joint.
Palindromic Rheumatism can affect your mood, emotions and confidence resulting in putting impact on your work, social life and relationships. The patient suffers from fatigue and pain while doing physical work. Women who have conceived and suffering from this disease must consult the doctors about the medication as its drugs leads to miscarriage also.
Proper exercises and diet can be a preventing measure in Palindromic Rheumatism. Exercise helps you to keep your joints working properly and proper diet helps you to be fit and you will not get over weight which further leads to many joint issues. During an attack, proper rest to the joints should be given. Ice or heat pads can also be used to ease pain and swelling.
It’s tough to give an estimate for its treatment cost as there is no such fixed treatment. On the whole the treatment cost will be the sum of doctor’s fee, cost of the tests a patient undergoes, the drugs or medications prescribed by the doctors. So it varies from doctor to doctor.
