Child Mental Health

Parents can always notice when the child is suffering from any physical illness, but it is not easy to know about the child's mental health. If the parents and child enjoy a close relation, they can identify the any changes in the behavior, or attitudes in their child. The children have a very fragile mind and they like adults can have problems related to their mental health.

The statistical study of child mental health shows that 20% of children suffer from emotional, mental and behavioral disorder and around 5-9 percentages of children are suffering from serious emotional disturbance (SED). And more than 49% of these children are prone to substance abuse disorder. The shocking fact is that only one-third of the children with mental and emotional disorder seek medical help though there is a large majority left behind.

Some common mental health problems seen in children include depression, anxiety, behavioral disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disease (ADHD).  Depression can run in family, and it is shown to start between the ages 15 to 30. But even very small child below of age 10 is also found to show some signs of depression. Depression can make the child moody, sad and feel good for nothing. Some even starts to think about suicide if the disorder is not properly diagnosed and treated. Children with anxiety experience unnecessary fear, nightmare, tension and worry over a long time period. If not treated at time, anxiety disorder can continue into their adulthood. A child with anxiety disorder usually does not have any friends and are afraid of everyone.

ADHD is a condition in children are in many cases diagnosed when they are toddlers, the child will be inattentive and hyperactive and difficult to manage. In many cases ADHD can be genetic, and behavioral therapy along with medicine can reduce the symptoms. Schizophrenia is also a type of mental disorder which is serious, rarely seen and poorly understood in children. Patients with this disorder usually see or hear voices of people who don't exist. These people fear that somebody is reading their mind and are making them do things, they feel that somebody else have a power on them. All the mental disorders will make the children withdraw into themselves, looses friends, and starts misbehaving and loose interest in studies.

The mental health disorders and illness can be identified on careful study of the child. The child with any emotional and mental problems usually starts talking less, eats less, are fearful of people around, they even stop going around with friends and their academic grades drop, some become aggressive and hot tempered. Medication, counseling and behavioral therapy can help these children. Support from family and friends can also mean a lot to them. Identifying the problem at start can reduce the disorder from doing much harm to your child.

Child abuse can also causes many mental and emotional problems in kids. Child abuse not only includes, physical and sexual abuse; emotional abuse and neglect from parents are also a form of child abuse. The physical and sexual abuse can be known from cuts and bruises made on the body. The emotional abuse and neglect also leaves a much deeper cuts and bruises, but in the mind of the abused. All type of abuse can come from anyone around you, from family members, from friend or even strangers. Child abuse can cause emotional problems in the child; they can feel insecure, depressed, and good for nothing. Most of the children who have an experience of abuse are seen to fall into alcohol and drug addiction. These children feel humiliated and are afraid to come forward for help, by the time parents are aware of the abuse the child may have experienced it more than a few times. Some children become abusers themselves when they grow up.

The emotional abuse and neglect are the form of child abuse which comes usually from the parent but the parents mostly doesn’t realize that they are abusing the child. Limited physical contact with your child; no hugging  or holding, humiliating in front of public, telling them that they are good for nothing and considering the child responsible for each and every problems are also a form of abuse.  Child abuse can result in Reactive Attachment Disorder in most cases, this is a condition where the child difficulty in establishing normal relationships and are not able to attain the normal development milestones. They are afraid of everyone and refuses to play or even talk with their friends.

The child is not able to come forward with their abuse problems very fast, it takes a lot of time and courage for them to do so. They always fear that, what if my parents don't believe me? Or won't they think I'm responsible? Always reassure your child and hear their problems patiently. This can help them a lot, as they have your support and love. Building up a healthy relationship with your child from the start can always help them to grow into an emotionally strong individual. Parenting is a skill which provides your child with his mental and physical growth and meets his emotional needs. A parent who complains, humiliates and neglect their child can cause emotional problems in them.  Taking care of your child, spending time with them, having a heart to heart talk to them and making them feel worth can help a lot.
