Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation First Aid

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is also known as CPR. It is a combination of chest compression and breathing to rescue someone. CPR is done on a patient who is not breathing or unconscious. This is also done on a person who suffers cardiac arrest, trauma cases, asphyxiation and near drowning cases. Providing first aid for cardiopulmonary resuscitation helps oxygen to reach the brain till the ambulance is called for.

First Aid for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

If you find the person conscious, take the person to a safe place and lay the person on a hard surface. Now tilt the head and lift the chin and open his/her airway. Check if the person is breathing; if not then give mouth-to-mouth respiration. If you are new to this, then follow these instructions on how to give mouth-to-mouth respiration.

First Aid for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation- Mouth-to-Mouth Respiration

Step1- Close the person’s nostrils

Step 2- Seal your mouth over his/her mouth.

Step 3- The first breath should last for a second.

Step 4- If you notice a rise, give a second breath.

Step 5- If not, tilt the head and raise the chin and then give a second breath.

First Aid for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation- to Restore Circulation by Compression

Step 1- With the heel of your palm; apply little pressure on the chest of the patient.

Step 2- Next place the other hand on top of the first one.

Step 3- Make sure the eyebrows are kept straight.

Step 4- Try to compress down by using the upper body weight.

Step 5- Now try to push fast and hard.

Step 6- After doing 30 compressions, try to clear the airway.

Step 7- Now give two mouth-to-mouth respirations.

Step 8- This is how you finish one cycle and you have to give about 100 compressions in a minute. Do this till the ambulance arrives.

The above CPR is for adults and when it comes for children the procedure is the same just that you need to give about 20 breaths in a minute and while give chest compressions, give it with one hand.

Things to be Cautious when giving CPR

  • While giving CPR it may injure the person’s liver, heart, lungs and ribs.

  • Immediate medical attention should be given after performing CPR

First aid for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation if given the right way can safe a person’s life. You can rescue a person by performing the above CPR steps carefully.
