Washington Income Tax

  • Washington DC uses three tax brackets to collect personal income tax from its residents.
  • These are based on taxation at the rates of 4%, 6% and 8.5% respectively.
  • Income from Social Security, state or federal pension income, or military retired pay is exempt from income tax up to $3,000.
  • Income tax returns in Washington DC are due on or before the 15th of April each year. If the 15th happens to fall on a weekend or a public holiday, then the next business day is considered.

Washington Sales Tax

  • The basic sales tax rate for Washington DC is 5.75%.
  • In actual practice there are different tax rates levied for different categories of goods and services.
  • The above strategy is used to take advantage of the fact that Washington DC is a tourist center and the increased rates are directed at non-residents who work in Washington.
  • The result is that sales tax rates range from 5.75% to 14.5%, this highest rate being for motel and hotel rooms.
  • There are certain sales tax exemptions which include medicines, residential utility services and groceries.

Washington Property Tax

  • Assessments for property are carried out by the Real Property Tax Administration, Office of Tax and Revenue and the Assessment Division.
  • In the state of Washington DC, there are 3 classes of real property:
    • Class 1: Residential real property which includes multifamily
    • Class 2: Industrial and commercial real property
    • Class 3: Vacant real property
  • There are different rates which apply to the different categories of property and these rates are applied on each $100 of the assessable value of property.
  • The current tax rates can be found on the official website of the Office of Tax and Revenue.
  • Property tax bills are sent in the post twice a year. The bill for the first half of the year is sent in February and that bill is due on 31st of March. The bill for the second half is sent in August, the bill being due on 15th of September.
  • There are a number of property tax relief programs which apply to certain categories of taxpayers such as first-time property buyers and senior citizens.

Washington Estate and Inheritance Tax

  • Inheritance tax is not collected by Washington DC.
  • Estate tax does however exist and can be filed by submitting Form D-76 or D76 EZ.
