Hawaii Personal Income Tax

According to the Hawaii tax guide, the government levies income tax on the residents at various rates.

For taxpayers who are single or who are married but file returns separately, the following rates apply:

  •  1.4 percent on the first $2,400 of taxable income
  •  3.2 percent on taxable income above$2,400 and below $4,800
  •  5.5 percent on taxable income above  $4,800 and below $9,600 
  •  6.4 percent on taxable income above$9,600 and below $14,400 
  •  6.8 percent on taxable income above $14,400 and below $19,200 
  •  7.2 percent on taxable income above $19,200 and below $24,000
  •  7.6 percent on taxable income above $24,000 and below $36,000
  •  7.9 percent on taxable income above $36,000 and below $48,000
  •  8.25 percent on taxable income above $48,000 and below $150,000
  •  9 percent on taxable income above $150,000 and below $175,000
  •  10 percent on taxable income above $175,000 and below $200,000
  •  11 percent on taxable income above $200,000 

In case of married people filing joint returns, they have to pay income tax at the same rate but the income slabs double.  For instance, married people have to pay 1.4 per cent income tax on the first $4,800 and nor $2,400 of taxable income.

The deadline for filing the income tax return is April 20.  If this date falls on a weekend or holiday, the next working day is the deadline.

Hawaii Sales Tax

According to the Hawaii tax guide, there is no sales tax.  In its place there is a general excise tax of 4 percent.  This is levied on all kinds of business activities –sales of products as well as services.  In the case of wholesale sales, there is a tax of 0.5 percent.

The island of Oahu imposes additional general excise tax which funds the mass transit system of Honolulu.

Hawaii Real and Personal Property Tax

Land and buildings classified as real property are taxed on ad valorem basis meaning that the property tax is a percentage of the market value of the property.  This tax is administered by counties.  A home which is a primary residence is allowed an exemption.  Aged people are also allowed exemptions.  Each county may also decide its own exemption rules.
In Hawaii, personal property like cars is not taxed.

Hawaii Inheritance and Estate Tax

According to the Hawaii tax guide, there is no inheritance tax.  The state collects estate tax in compliance with federal rules.

Taxpayers in Hawaii can file their returns electronically.  They can also check their refund status in the same manner.
