Indiana Tax Guide

This is a brief summary of different taxes levied on the residents of state of Indiana.

Indiana Personal Income Tax

  • The tax which is collected from the residents of Indiana is at a flat rate of 3.4% of the individual’s federal income. There is some modification done on the final figure.
  • Personal income tax returns are due on the 15th of April each year. If the 15th is a holiday or falls on a weekend, then the next business day is considered.
  • Individual counties in Indiana also collect income tax so it is advisable to have a list of tax rates of different counties. The Indiana Department of Revenue is responsible for the release of this list.

Indiana Sales Tax

  • The sales tax rate was raised to 7% on 1 April 2008. The reason for this was due to adding a penny to the state sales tax in order to contribute to cuts in property tax.
  • The principle behind sales tax in Indiana is that it is imposed on those categories of transfer of services or properties which come within the taxable bracket.

Indiana Property Tax

  • This tax is administered by the local authorities and is overseen by the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.
  • This department has created summaries which give the taxpayers the required information and details regarding the property tax in different counties.
  • These summaries also provide a breakup to local spending of each dollar paid in property tax and the list of debt.

Indiana Estate and Inheritance Taxes

  • For the purpose of filing an inheritance tax return, an IH-6 form needs to be completed by the administrator of a person’s estate within 9 months of their death.
  • If the entire estate is left to an heir is less than the minimum limit, or if it is left to a charitable organization or a spouse, then the return need not be filed.

Indiana Other Useful Tax Information

  • If taxpayers are qualified, they may file state returns at the Indiana Department of Revenue’s web-based tax filing portal, I-File.
  • By law, all businesses in Indiana whose merchant certificates have expired as a result of not paying delinquent sales tax should post their details online.
