True Blood is a vampire story based in Bon Temps, a small fictional town in the state of Louisiana where vampires and humans co exist in the same society. The series finds in base in novels written by Charlaine Harris on the southern Vampire Mystery.
Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) is the prime character around whom the story revolves. Sookie is a waitress in a local bar in Bon Temps named “Merlotte’s”. She has a unique quality of telepathy and can listen to people’s thought. In the series Sookie undergoes various adventures. Merlotte’s owner Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) is a space shifter who admires Sookie. The show acknowledges the fact that creatures like vampires, telepaths and shape shifts co-exist. As a Japanese firm invents a form of synthetic blood, on which vampires can feed, they no longer require human blood to sustain. Thus in this fictional town vampires and humans co exist. Vampires are part of mainstream society here. Though Sookie is a telepath, she considers herself cursed as she is different from others around her. Sookie saves life of 173 year old vampires and finds herself attracted towards Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) in the bar. Others in the cast include Sookie’s brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten), her best friend Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley)
The story shows that humans like to drain off vampire blood as this gives them a high and ecstasy same as that derived from heroin. The Vampire blood known as “v” acts like drugs for human. Though vampires like to do exist in the society, they have to face stiff opposition from some organizations like few churches who would not like vampires and humans to co-exist in the same society.
Four seasons of the series have already been aired and HBO has announced the commencement of season five in the summer of 2012.
True blood has had mixed response from the critics. After season one it had a score of 64 on Metacritic. But as the series progressed it received more and more favorable response. The series speaks about vampire rights and some critics say what they actually want to portray is gay and lesbian rights in our society.
The first episode did not gather much viewership and it was estimated at 1.44 million which is considered very moderate. But viewership grew to 6.8 million by November 2008
