Miss Teen USA is a beauty title established by the Miss Universe Organization for young girls between 15–19 years of age.
The pageant was first conducted in 1983 and has been broadcast live on various channels, most recently on NBC from 2003-2007. It was declared in March 2007 that the broadcast of the Miss Teen USA contest on NBC had not been reaffirmed, and that Miss Teen USA 2007 would be the last televised event.
The Miss Teen USA title was formed in 1983 as a sister contest to the Miss USA system. The first beauty title was held in Lakeland, Florida in August, 1983 and was bagged by Ruth Zakarian of New York. The pageant shifted to April the next year, and then was held in January the following two years. It was held in the month of July from 1988–1990 and has been conducted in August since 1991. The most popular host city was Biloxi, Mississippi which hosted the pageant from for four years consistently i.e. 1990–1994, which caused problems in 1992 when the conclusion of the live broadcast was obstructed because of Hurricane Andrew. Other host cities includes South Padre Island, Texas which conducted the title on 1997, and 2001–2002, Palm Springs, California hosted the contest in the year 2003–2004, and 2006 and Shreveport, Louisiana conducted this pageant from 1998 to 2000.
The delegates have to complete the preliminary round of competition, which encompasses private interviews with the judges and a presentation show where they compete in swimsuit and evening gown.
During the final competition, the semi-finalists are declared and go on to compete in evening gown and swimsuit. From 1983 to 2002 all the delegates who qualified for semi-final round also faced an interview session along with swimsuit and evening gown competition, which was concluded with one or two final interview questions. In 2003, a new model was incorporated where the top fifteen competed in evening gown, the top ten participants took part in swimsuit round and the top five participants competed in the final question round. In 2006, the sequence of competition was altered where the top fifteen competed in swimsuit and the top ten in evening gown. The latest competition module was incorporated since 2008, where the top fifteen competed both in swimsuit and evening gown, and the top five contestants competed in the final round of questions who was signed up by a panel of judges.
From 1988, it was announced that if the Miss Teen USA winners wish to go on to compete at Miss USA, they should be the winner of a Miss USA state crown. A total of seven Miss Teen USA winners have taken part in Miss USA, of which four had won their state Miss USA crowns first.
Miss Teen USA is coined by the Miss Universe Organization, a Donald J. Trump and NBC Universal collaboration. Young women from all over the country vie for the crown and the chance to develop personally, and professionally, by nurturing career goals, playing the role of spokeswoman of the Miss Universe Organization and becoming a part of cause collaborations devoted to education and action.
