Leap Day Modern Family Season 3 Episode 17

As the name suggests the episode is all about leap day which also happens to be Cameron’s birthday and Mitchell wants to make it memorable. Phill thinks this a bonus day which comes every four years and it should be celebrated and so he wants to take the family to Santa Monica Pier to learn how to trapeze. But things do not go as planned. Kids in the Dunphy household are excited to plan the trapeze. Claire weeps seeing the sad ASPCA infomercial about the plight of shelter dogs. Alex and Haley join her and Phil realizes this mood change is caused by their menstrual cycle. Even Luke notices a mood change in his mom and sisters during those times of the month. Claire is upset because Phil doesn’t discuss her mood issue with her and backs out from the trapeze along with the girls and they keep Luke with them at home. The entire episode then turns into man vs. women drama.

Mitchell is planning a birthday party for Cam with a gay movie but suddenly realizes that it is a bad idea as Cam’s family is still coming to terms with recent problems and if he screens this movie it would be insensitive on his part to do this. Mitchell now has less time to plan and decides on a boat cruise, although Cam had insisted on a quiet birthday. But when they go to the dock the captain says that he can take only 30 people onboard including the crew. He would have arranged for a different boat but with less than 2 hours remaining it would not be possible. This results in an argument and the captain orders everyone to vacate the boat .Thus no one gets in the boat. Gloria even hits the captain in a spat of anger and Cam’s birthday plan gets destroyed. But Mitchell suddenly realizes that he can do something which will be liked by Cam. So the entire family decides to join Phill and others in the Pier and enjoy trapeze. Cam is very happy and ultimately Mitchell’s plan of making his birthday a memorable event is successful.
