Introduction

Also called the Dragacevo Assembly, Guca trumpet festival is a brass band event held annually in Serbia. It is actually a competition between 50 brass bands to bag the Golden trumpet award. It is considered as the wildest music festival in the world. More than 600,000 people attend this trumpet festival in the tiny town with a population of just over 2000. Such is the popularity of his festival in this region.

When and Where

Held annually in a small town called Guca in the Dragacevo region of Serbia, this event is usually scheduled in the second week of August, which is summer for Serbia.

History

Trumpets have been a part of the Serbian landscape ever since Prince Milos Obrenovic commissioned the formation of a trumpet band. All major events including the auspicious ceremonies are accompanied by the playing of trumpet in the background. It is today almost a national event and is evolving into a diverse gathering. The first Guca trumpet festival was held in the year October, 1961. It was held in Guca in the yard of the famous church of saints Gabriel and Michael. It was more of a modest assembly owing to the political scene at that time. But slowly it grew and has taken a prominent position as the folk culture of the country. The trumpet capital as Guca is known for its hospitality and attracts many visitors from all over the world.

What They Do

today the trumpet festival is not only a competition of the top brass bands but also a place to come to and experience the food and festivities of this small nation. Make-shift restaurants and bars provide unlimited fun to the tourists. Little pigs and cows are roasted on open fires and washed down with the local beer. The actual event is a five day festival and only the few dozen finalists compete during the event. Elimination rounds are held earlier in the year.  The festival is split into 3 parts: Friday has an opening concert, Saturday is the night of celebrations and Sunday is the competition.

How to Get There

The nearest airport is the city of Belgrade after which the tourists take a four-hour bus ride to this tiny town.
