Dancing with the stars, as the name suggests, is a dance based reality show where a celebrity from any field, viz showbiz, sports, politics etc is coupled with a trained ballroom dancer or choreographer and are positioned against each other. Based on judges’ remarks as well as votes from audience through poll, each week one pair is eliminated and ultimately the winner is decided.

This extremely popular reality show is aired in ABC and has just completed its 13th season this November, 2011 and scheduled for the next season on March, 2012.It was first premiered in June 2005.

The show is based on the British reality show Strictly Come Dancing. Dancing with the stars has gained immense popularity and the show has been adapted in many different countries in the world including India, Argentina, Germany, Brazil, Denmark, Russia, and Spain.

Tom Bergeron hosts the show along with co-hosts Lisa Canning who was there in season one, Samantha Harris who was there for season two through nine, Brooke Burke Charvet who has been there from season ten onwards.

The show has been judged by eminent personalities like Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.For several ocassions, former contestants have also been in the seats of the judges like Drew Lachey, Emmitt Smith, Apolo Anton Ohno, Helio Castroneves, MelB & others. Sometimes some celebrities who are well known in the field of dancing have also graced the show as special judges like Michael Flatley, Baz Luhrmann or Donnie Burns.

The thirteen seasons of the show has almost seen 150 couples and 31 trained choreographers. The choreographers are sometimes new or sometimes they appear in more than one season like Cheryl Burke & Tony Dovolani, who have been there for twelve seasons.

The elimination is done through judges’ marks, which is rated on a scale of 1-10 and the cumulative is considered and vote from North American People which is done through a toll free number, ABC website or SMS. Based on judges score and number of votes received the couple which has the minimal score is eliminated.

Till now athletes have been the most successful participants in the show. They have the highest strike rate of winning or becoming the runner ups.

Various merchandise including DVDs and books have been released in the market based on the show.

The show has had many nominations in various award functions too.
