How to install Windows xp on vista machine?

Installing Windows Vista in a machine that already has Windows XP and Linux?

Description : Hi all, I have a PC that has Windows XP and Linux (dual boot) already installed. Windows XP is installed on the primary partition (C:). The rest of the space is being used by Linux. I would like to keep my Linux installation intact and install Windows vista also, such that Linux,Windows XP and Windows Vista would be the booting options. The "C:" could be resized or if needed windows XP installation could be even formatted. What is the best way in which I can achieve this without disturbing linux? Thanks in advance. BR, Laser

Description : i have tried upgrading my machine from xp to windows but the installation keeps stopping half way through and says boot not configured properly. i then tried installing a custom install and it's still saying the same thing at like 60% complete and now windows xp won't even start and i don't know how i can fix it. please help

Answer : Is your computer capable of running Vista? If not then your wasting your time, it wont run properly. You will now have to do a clean install of XP to get it working again.

Can I activate Windows Vista using my Windows XP license key?

Description : I have a COA license key from my Windows XP retail box. I've uninstalled the XP installation from my machine so as not to break the don't-install-on-more-than-one computer restriction. Can I use this key to activate Vista? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Installation windows xp?

Description : Have a computer with Vtsta home, i want to give my other computer to my grandchild.--The one programme that i use alot on the xp machine is 'Window picture it' This programme will not install on the Vista machine. The question is ? can i install my copy of windows XP onto the Vista Machine.-- This will be the only way that i could inrtall 'Picture-it' on my Vista Machine by having XP on the same machine. Dave...Thanks.

Answer : something none of the others has mentioned that if you install the copy of xp from the computer you are giving to your grandchild then when you register it on your vista machine it will invlidate it on the other machine meaning you'll need a new copy. it was part of billybob's master plan that vista was to make a lot of the older hardware unuseable but the newer hardware used on the vista machines is'nt always compatable with any drives available for xp.he tried doing it when xp was introduced but they used drivers for hardware useable by win2000 and people wiyh older hardware found that win2ooo drivers would work with xp in some cases there by thwarting billybob's planned obseletion of pre xp hardware. you could do something really radical and get 1 of the linux distros and set up your dual boot free and use wine to run picture-it there by sticking it to billybob.

I have a complex question about the installation of xp and vista on a laptop comptuer.?

Description : I plan on getting the Acer Extensa EX5620-6266 notebook pc. I want to install Windows XP Pro to it and wipe out the vista installation. The notebook does not come with a recovery disk. My question is now complex as I do not know if xp can be installed as the drivers for the laptop may only be for vista. I need to know how to install xp to this laptop 100% since no driver cd in included. Now, as for vista that would be preinstalled, there is no recovery disk. So, if i wipe the hard drive, how can I reinstall vista in the future? Buying the laptop auto buys me vista, so how can I reinstall vista with no disk of any type from a wiped machine? If I get a recovery disk for it or make one, will that do the trick?

Answer : Ok, If you want to install Xp pro why don't you ask the place you get your laptop to install xp for you instead of vista. If they don't do it then, install xp as new clean install. If the laptop comes with a pre-install vista then the serial of the vista installation code should be underneath the laptop. Therefore if they don't give you the cd you can get a copy from mates-and use the serial underneath your laptop to activate it. For CD regarding the laptop drivers it should be included in the package-otherwise download from acer site. If you don't have mate and still want to use vista and is within the manufacture warranty period then just give acer a call saying windows vista won't boot-up i need a recorvery cd. They will send you one.

How do I remove a partial installation of Windows Vista Ultimate?

Description : Everytime my system boots now it wants to go to Windows Vista even though I chose not to install it on one of my machines. How do I remove the partial installation. It's not only annoying, I can't even press F8 to go into Safe mode in XP. Thanks!

Answer : It may have already written itself to the boot record. If that's the case, boot off your XP CD and go into the repair console and try fixmbr or fixboot (I think either will work here), then reboot (after taking out the CD) and see if that fixes it.

Upgrading Windows XP to Windows Vista?

Description : I have two XP machines, a laptop and a desktop, and I'm think of upgrading the OS to Vista Home Prem 32bit. My machines meet the HW reqmts. I AM aware of some incompatibility issues with some drivers and some apps though this is getting better now with SP1. Never having done an upgrade, I've always bought the machines as is with the OS already installed, I'm coming with a novice question. When you upgrade the OS, in the installation process, will there be an option that will let you keep your drivers and apps? This is not a from scratch install. Just an upgrade to the OS portion itself only. I'd like to keep the drivers intact and not have to hunt down the drivers *example: speaker drivers* and reinstall them. It would save me so much trouble. Any speaking from actual hands-on experience out there?

Answer : I have Vista Ultimate and i upgraded from XP to Ultimate. When i upgraded, it let me keep my files but im not sure with home premium. Just install Vista when your computer is booted up, dont "boot from CD". It should let you keep the files but there might be some imcompatability issues.

Windows XP won't install on my machine?

Description : Now as all of you Vista Owners out there who have to go through all of Vista's flaws i feel sorry for you deeply as do i have to every day. I bought a Toshiba A205-S5804 Laptop for $500 and it was a great deal, well back then. Sure not the best computer but a decent work computer. Anyways the hard ware was great but the software (Vista) was horrible. Now i don't want your opinion about Vista and how you have no problems with it. I officially hate Windows Vista, not Windows itself though. Sure the new features are great and the aero makes your insides bright and cheerful but the OS itself is ridiculous. I'm not going to get into details and such but i uninstalled Vista completely with a HDD Format. I pop in my XP Installation CD and it can't find any Hard Drives or "Disks". Well this has happened several times and still no result. I don't enjoy Vista and need XP back because i have tried boot manager software and partitioning the HDD for Vista and XP and i have read many tutorials and forums but nothing works. I need some Super Brain genius that is good with pc's to help me out!!! Thank YOu!!! if you need any info just type into google: Toshiba A205-S5804. you'll get it Thank YOu. ^_^ (By the way VIsta right Now is saying "Windows explorer is not responding" And my taskbar keeps disapearing. PLZZZZ HELP!!!)

Answer : If your laptop has a SATA hard drive you'll need drivers for your SATA controller before XP can use it (or even see it). According to CNet reviews this particular laptop uses a Mobile Intel GL960 Express chipset, which includes the SATA controller. If you can find the XP drivers for that chipset, or just for the SATA controller, you should be able to finish installing, but you need to have them on a separate disk or drive for the XP install CD to find. They'll usually come on a floppy disk when you buy a SATA-ready motherboard. That's less of a problem in a desktop PC, but a laptop will be more difficult because you're dealing with a more limited number of drives and no guaranteed way to add more.

Windows Vista Installation Problem. Please Help!?

Description : I've installed Vista on my machine before but... I recently upgraded my hardware (new Seagate 7200.10 400GB SATA HD and an ATI x1650pro 512MB graphics card) and when i attempt to install a fresh copy of vista, at the point of installation when it restarts for the first time, it just shuts off and continues to restart itself. i attempted to install several times and it still will not work. I had to stick with XP Pro. (it installs like a charm). Could anyone please give me some suggestions? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer : Try installing Vista with the original video card. Vista has been very finicky about peripherals. I have seen it shutdown sound, saying no audio device installed yet the audio device shows up in device manager. If the install goes OK, reinstall the video card and see if it boots OK. If it does load the drivers and you should be OK.
