Answer : btw i have a dell 1520 and i have successfully installed xp pro, and yes its best, Vista has so many compatibility problems and not really all that good even w/sp1, first u need a xp disc with sata drivers as xp wont load on sata drives w/o it u can download a copy from here http://www.mininova.org/tor/1533934 with sata drivers already installed, or simply use nlite to modify and add yur drivers(the hard way). here is a tutorial on how to make it http://paparadit.blogspot.com/2007/06/installing-sata-hard-drive-with-windows.html

Is it possible to install vista on a laptop with windows xp?
Description : i recently bought a dell inspiron that came with the vista installation cd. i want to know if its possible to use that cd to install vista to my old dell xps which runs on windows xp
Answer : I was curious about Vista. The Microsoft web site has a section where they can determine if your XP can handle Vista. Mine needed more memory (at least 1GB) - you can purchase more memory from Crucial Memory.

How do we install Windows XP on a Windows Vista installed Laptop ?
Description : Hiya I have just bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. It has come with Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed. However, I don't like Vista. Hence, I want to install Windows XP. I have got the CD of Windows XP from my previous laptop Dell Inspiron 6400. And I have also got the CD of Device Drivers from my new laptop. I presume installing a Windows XP shouldn't be a problem. But I am not sure about installing the device drivers. How easy is it to install Device Drivers ? My concern is, will all the system components (display, sound card etc.) work properly after the installation ? Could you also suggest any precautions I have to take, if any ? Cheers
Answer : make sure you can get xp drivers for your pc as some of the newer ones are not compatible with xp as there are no drivers available for xp
Am trying to remotely help a friend install Windows XP on a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop, help with a boot disk ?
Description : Original installation was Vista & system is screwed up with virus & other malware, it does boot up but goes bonkers soon, BSOD Needs formatting & clean install. No restore disks available, but drivers available from dell site Booting from Windows XP disk, hard drive not found error > SATA hard drive & no floppy drive available Tried partitionlogic boot disk, but again hard drive not found Are there other boot disks that can format hard drive & install SATA drivers on hard drive He does not want Vista, but XP only all 5 answers are perfectly good and helpful but i was hoping for some boot disk with sata tools, lol and i still remain hopeful,, that it can be done thanks Mysticman, not sure on that step ... have already suggested nlite to that chap, but no feedback so far and i think i have found the perfect solution from Philip heck, i missed that out >> thought it was only going to get stuck on a: & now that it will allow you to change to d: .... guess that does it Will keep you posted, as soon i hear from that chap, thanks everybody 7 best answers here & i can choose only one Philip's solution helped most, because that slipped me Let the community choose for me and thanks everybody !
Answer : :) I have a Vostro 1400. You have 2 (easy) options. You can enter BIOS and enable IDE emulation of SATA drives (its not actually called 'IDE emulation' but you should be able to find the setting I'm talkin about). This will slighly decrease the performance of your SATA drive OR you can setup Windows XP with SATA drivers by pressing F6 at the point in the install where it asks you to select additional drivers. Use an external USB Floppy drive with the SATA drivers off of the Dell website. Alternatively, I believe the latest versions of XP setup do come with SATA drivers, but don't quote me on this. There are also guides for modifying the XP install to include SATA drives.
How do I know if it is possible for my local computer tech to install Windows XP on a new Dell laptop?
Description : I am looking at purchasing a new Dell Studio 17 Laptop. Unfortunately Dell is completely worthless in letting me know if after I removed Vista if the installation of XP would go alright? I would assume it would...but the techs at Dell all told me different things, so I don't know what to believe? I work from home, and having Vista isn't even an option...I don't want to even THINK about another type of computer...this is what I want...but I need to know if XP will work on it. Any ideas? (P.S....I was wondering if the reason they are hesitant to say is just b/c of marketing agreements, and also new features like the backlit keyboard that might not work with XP?) Thanks for ANYONES help! http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/laptop_studio_17?c=us&cs=19&l=en&ref=lthp&s=dhs Also...this computer unfortunately cannot be purchased with no operating system...
Answer : Dell has not released all the drivers for Studio 15 and 17 on XP. There would be some available but not all. I have seen websites which cater to this need. However, I have a studio 15 and let me be a bit frank in telling that Vista is not all that bad on Studio. I think its a perception problem as well. I suggest that you use Vista till Windows 7 arrives early next year and I am sure there will be an upgrade to the new version. I have seen Windows 7 initial promos and they are quite good! So best wishes with your new laptop.
Question about windows OS and installation?
Description : I upgraded my Dell laptop to windows 7 from windows vista. My parents HP desktop is still running windows XP. Can i use my windows vista installation cd that came with my dell laptop on my parents HP desktop now that i don't need it anymore? Is that possible? thank you!
Answer : 1) The Dell disk might actually mess up your parents' desktop. It has drivers specific to the Dell, and does not have the drivers for the HP. This could be fixed by downloading drivers from the site. Dell might also have special protection to keep it from being installed on anything but a Dell system. However, I have seen it done before. 2) This is actually a violation of the End User License Agreement. This is considered OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) operating system software. The license is non-transferrable, which means that it's illegal to use on anything except for your Dell. This hasn't stopped people before, but I'm obliged to inform you of the legality.
