Shiv Nadar ranks 201th in the Forbes World Top billionaire List with $4.2 billion. The HCL Group founded by him is one of the Indian technology giants. Shiv Nadar had been the co-founder of HCL in 1976. The next three decades saw it transforming from a hardware company into an IT Enterprise. He could do this by constantly reforming and reinventing the focus of the company. The successor in the line is his daughter Roshni. She is already the chief executive of HCL Corp. from last April.
The thing that marked Shiv Nadar different from the others was he dared to dream of the panoramic growth of the IT industry even during a time when there were only 250 computers in India. With that vision‚ in 1976‚ he led a group of young people who believed in his dream. Who would now believe that HCL was actually born out of a ‘barsati’) akin to a garage) in Delhi? After three decades‚ it stands as the magnanimous $5.5 billion global transformational technology enterprise. The vision of Shiv Nadar has certainly travelled a long way. It has designed India’s first PC and now it is working on the Boeing Dreamliner’s Flight Management Systems. True as it is‚ Shiv Nadar had really been a pioneer in modern computing. HCL now has more than 77‚000 professionals operating from 29 countries with hundreds of thousands of points at different parts of the world including 500 in India. The sectors of HCL offer services in Product Engineering‚ Custom & Package Applications‚ BPO‚ IT Infrastructure Services‚ IT Hardware‚ Systems Integration‚ and distribution of ICT products.
However‚ some of the ventures of Nadar had been not so successful. He partnered with Singapore Telecom to make business in the booming telecom market of India. This proved to be a failure. Equally unsuccessful was his business attempts in the granite and aquaculture business.
As a person‚ education and healthcare have been always the fields Nadar wanted to develop in India. He had founded the SSN College of Engineering in Chennai in 1996 after the name of his father. He also gifted out Rs. 1 million worth of HCL shares to the college. The college promotes research activities as well. Nadar is also a member of the Executive Board of Indian School of Business. The SSN Trust of Shiv Nadar also provides scholarships to100 students from 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
Shiv Nadar is also a member in the governing board of Public Health Foundation of India.
