General Motors (GM) is an international automaker headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, the US. It is the second largest automaker in the world after Toyota. The company manufactures cars and trucks in 31 countries globally and sells and provides services to these vehicles in the course of the divisions such as Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden.  General Motors has employed around 209,000 people in all the key regions of the world and is operating its business in about 157 countries. General Motors was established by William C. Durant on 16 September 1908. In the year 1909, GM possessed the Reliance Motor Truck Company of Owosso, and the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company of Pontiac. But Durant had to lose the controlling power of GM in 1910 because huge amount of loan taken for the company’s acquisitions was coupled up with a fall in new vehicle sales.

However, the company was restructured by bankruptcy safeguard in 2009 and was relisted on most important stock exchanges in 2010 with world’s largest Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Over the years, GM has taken part in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), Le Mans, NASCAR, SCCA, and several other world venues. The company’s engines had been doing extremely well in the Indy Racing League (IRL) during the 1990s by being the triumphant in race in the small V-8 category.
