Pop Music

Pop music is such a music that can be considered as contemporary music. Fifty five years prior, the music which was contemporary at that time was also pop and the father of pop, Bob Dylan paved the way for today’s pop music. Today's music is also called pop, so pop is virtually a domain of contemporary music that fascinates and survives in all ages, which is versatile and flexible enough to change its style and tone from first to next level and still sustain some integrity.

History of Pop Music

So, we are having jazz, rock, blues, R&B, dance numbers and many more genres influencing this specific genre of music. Elements of folk and country music have also been sometime found to be present in pop. The basic principle that pop music undertakes to sustain its popularity is use of melody that would remain in the minds of people. They do not facilitate catchy tunes but rhythms and tunes which compel you to remember it. Also, the songs are enriched with lots of music; there is one motto which goes through the complete song and doesn't change throughout. But this is the factor which has received much criticism around the song. Critics often deem that pop is too simple and hence, maybe worthless.

Originally the term was an acronym of, and synonymous to, popular music, but developed in 1954 to establish a particular musical category. The stylistic origin of pop music is folk, R&B, jazz, and conventional pop music. The common instruments are electric and bass guitar, drum kit and keyboard. The traditional and cultural origins date back to 1950's in the US. It is famous worldwide since 1960s.

However, popular music is defined by what people love at large and what they have complete access to. It is a social depiction, a social level of its own and it is not just one more form of music. It is a music that you will never find boring and old and will be happy and pleased to hear it again and again. Pop music is a liberal and inexplicit category of modern music not leveled by artistic influences but by its promising audience or future commercial market. Pop is a music composed with calculated objective to influence most of its contemporaries.

Popularity of Pop Music

The commercial aspect of pop is that it is a huge music industry. The production and sale of pop is more than any other form of contemporary music. The rhythm, the beats, the tune, the simplicity, everything is clubbed to generate the magic which we define as pop. Most of the time, all the best selling songs are those of the pop domain and very rarely does other genres make it to the top of the top ten list.

With time, however pop music has witnessed a lot of changes. With the advent of the several recording devices which can now create several types of sounds, pop has plunged into a new era of technology also. These recording devices and the ability to change the tonal quality of voices have virtually set pop apart from several other forms of musical genres like blue and jazz etc.

Phases of Pop Music

Artistic concepts like complex musical type and aesthetics are not a topic in the composition of pop songs, the key objective being audience satisfaction and commercial victory. Although the goal of pop music is to sell records and capture the market of music and set records in the charts, it does not need huge acclaim or commercial success. Features of Pop Music

The standard model of pop music is the song, generally less than five minutes in duration. The instrumentation can span from an orchestra to a solo performer. In spite of this wide choice, a standard lineup in a pop music consists of a lead guitarist, a bassist, a drummer (or an electronic drum machine), a keyboardist and one or more singers, basically not instrumentalists by themselves. Pop songs are normally conspicuous by a heavy  rhythmic component, a major style and conventional structure. The most general modification is strophic in type and emphasizes on great melodies, catchy hooks and the fascination part of the verse-chorus-verse arrangement, with the chorus generally contrasting the verse rhythmically, melodically, and harmonically.


Lyrics in pop music compositions are generally easy, simple and mention universal experiences and feelings, away from incomprehensible or debatable issues. The international influence of pop was evident in the new millennium, with artists from across the planet mesmerizing the genre and local variants blending with the mainstream. Pop music is now the most famous style of music, fascinating the youth culture, and competing with hip hop, dance and country music prevalent in the modern era.
