MTV Awards

Instituted in 1984 as an alternative to Grammy Awards, the MTV Video Music awards honor the contributions made by artists and technicians in all the genres of music, especially the pop genre.

History of the MTV awards

Established by the Music Television (MTV) in 1984, MTV awards are annual events which are telecast live MTV. MTV award trophies depict an astronaut on the moon. The first ever MTV Video Music Awards ceremony in 1984 was a huge hit with Madonna's power-packed performance of the song 'Like a Virgin'.

There have been controversies galore during the MTV award functions. In 1991, differences between Poison's Bret Michaels and C C DeVille led to a scuffle after DeVille's ''inept'' performance. Britney Spears attracted a lot of flak from PETA activists after her performance at the 2001 MTV awards, featuring a yellow snake. Madonna too created a huge controversy when she kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera after their performance at the 2003 MTV awards.

Current Award Categories of the MTV awards

MTV awards are given for Video of the Year, Best Male Video, Best Female video, Best Group Video, Best New Artist, Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Editing, Monster Single of the Year, Quadruple Threat of the Year, Best Collaboration and MTV Video Vanguard award.

2005 MTV Awards

MTV Video Music Awards in 2005 were held on August 28 at the American Airlines Arena in Miammi. Sean 'Diddy' Combs was the host of the award ceremony, who handed over his jewels-studded designer watch worth 10,000 dollars to a lucky person in the audience.

Green Day's 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' dominated the 2005 MTV awards by bagging the Best Rock Video, Best Group Video and Video of the Year awards. They also won the Viewers Choice Award for 'American Idiot'. The Killers' 'Mr. Brightside' got the Best New Artist which they performed live on the stage. 'Feel Good Inc.' by Gorrilaz bagged the Breakthrough Video Award.

Shakira and Alejandro Sanz performed 'La Tortura' in Spanish during the award ceremony. Some of the other notable performers included Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, Kayne West and Jamie Foxx, My Chemical Romance and Daddy Yankee.

2006 MTV Awards

The MTV awards, which were held for two consecutive years at American Airlines Arena in Miami from 2004, were held at Radio City Music Hall in the New York City on August 31, 2006. Jack Black, who hosted the award ceremony, came wearing a Moonman suit and performed a stunt by setting himself ablaze right at the beginning of the award ceremony.

2006 MTV awards were different from the previous ceremonies as this was the first time that award for all the performer's categories like Video of the Year award, Best Male Video, Best Group Video etc were given on the basis of viewers' votes. Also, award for the Breakthrough Video was not given in 2006.

Pink bagged the Best Pop Video for 'Stupid Girls' while 'Move Along' by the All-American Rejects got the Best Group Video. 'Dance Dance' by Fall Out Boy received the Viewers' Choice Award while Avenged Sevenfold's 'Bat Country' won the Best New Artist trophy. 'Miss Murder' by AFI got the Best Rock Video Award.

Justin Timberlake and Timbaland gave a performance of 'My Love/Sexy Back' during the ceremony. Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Panic! At the Disco and The Killers were some of the notable performers who wowed the audiences with their acts.

2007 MTV awards

MTV Awards were held on September 9, 2007 at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Justin Timberlake dominated the MTV awards in the year 2007 by bagging Male Artist of the Year Award, Quadruple Threat of the Year award, Best Direction and Best Choreography.

'Umbrella' by Rihanna F/Jay Z won two awards for Video of the Year and Monster Single of the Year. Female Artist of the Year award went to Fergie while 'Fall Out Boy' got the Best Group Award. 'Beautiful Liar' by Beyonce and Shakira got the Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration Award. Gym Class Heroes won the Best New Artist award while award for Best Editing went to Gnarls Barkley for 'Smiley Faces'.

2008 MTV Awards

MTV Awards in the year 2008 would be held on September 7 at Paramount Pictures Studio in Los Angeles. Some of the well-known nominees for the award include Amy Adams for ‘Enchanted’ in Best Female Performance category, Seth Rogen for Best Comedic Performance, Michael Cera for ‘Juno’ in Best male Performance category. ‘I am Legend’ and ‘Juno’ are the nominees for Best Movie category.
