Golden Globe Awards honor the excellence of actors, technicians and professionals involved in film and television industry.
History of the Golden Globe Awards
Instituted by the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association. The first Golden Globe award ceremony was an informal one in 1944 where distinguished achievement in film industry was honored at 20th Century Fox. ‘The Song of Bernadette’ won two awards – one for Jennifer Jones as Best Actress and the other for Best Film. Best Actor award was won by Paul Lukas for ‘Watch on the Rhine’.
It was in 1945 that a formal event was held for Golden Globe awards. The same year Golden Globes Statuette was also introduced. In 1950, differences among the members led to the formation of two groups – the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association and Foreign Press Association of Hollywood. For some time, the organizations gave away separate awards, with one group giving Golden Globes while the other awarding Henriettas, named after their president Henry Gris.
The association separated the motion picture category into two categories – drama and musical or comedy and decided to give awards for best film, best actor and best actress in these two categories to honor the acting skills in both genres.
The year 1955 witnessed the reunion of both the groups under the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. In the same year, the Golden Globes started honoring contributions in TV along with films. In 2007, the best animated feature film category was introduced in the Golden Globes. At present, Golden Globes give away awards in 25 categories – 14 in motion pictures and 11 in TV.
