The APRA Music Awards is a yearly event by which members of the music industry, specifically songwriters, composers and publishers are recognized for their achievements in the categories -Screen Music, Art Music and Popular Contemporary. In connection, the APRA Song of the Year is one award voted upon only by the members of the APRA Music Awards. It has been in existence since 1991.

In 2012, the Song of the Year was awarded to Gotye feat Kimbra for their song Somebody That I Used to Know written by Wally de Becker and Luiz Bonfa. In 2011, the award was given to songwriters and artists Angus and Julia Stone for their work entitled Big Jet Plane.

The 2013 APRA Music Awards are slated to be seen on June 17, 2013 in Australia at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. It will be hosted by Clare Bowditch and Jonathan Biggins. This would be the 31st year that the awards show has been in existence. This year(2016), the categories to be voted upon are Rock Work of the Year, Dance Work of the Year, Urban Work of the Year, Blues & Roots Work of the Year, Country Work of the Year, International Work of the Year, Most Played Australian Work Overseas, Most Played Australian Work, and Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year.
