History of American Film Institute Awards

The American Film Institute Awards is the awards ceremony hosted by the American Film Institute to recognize the 10 top movies and TV shows for that year. The American Film Institute itself is a non-profit organization. This 2013 marks the 41st anniversary of the American Film Institute Awards ceremony.

This 2013 is also the year that Mel Brooks was honoured with a 41st AFI Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is meant to honour individuals who have been able to make lasting contribution to the motion picture and TV industry. Mel Brooks has been a director specializing in comedy for decades. Incidentally, Mel Brooks is among just 14 people who have been able to snare a Tony Award, an Oscar, a Grammy, and an Emmy Award in their lifetime.

For the AFI Awards 2012, several excellent movies garnered recognition – some of these movies were Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and The Dark Knight Rises. Also for the 2012 awards, several TV shows were also recognized including American Horror Story: Asylum, Breaking Bad and Game Change. The American Film Institute Awards are remarkable for honouring not just actors, actresses and directors but the entire team that produces each movie or TV show.
