These awards are better known as World Soundtrack Academy. The name of these awards itself speaks about its popularity. These awards or academy are founded for the objective of overseeing the educational, cultural and the professional aspects of art of film music. This academy was founded in year 2001 by Flanders International Film Festival.
With the purpose of positive and constructive approach of film music, Ghent International Film Festival and renowned composers started this World Soundtrack academy. Every year this event takes place in Ghent, Belgium, most of the time this event was organized in Bijloke Concert hall. Award categories which comes under World Sound Awards are Best Original Score of the year, Best Original Song Written Directly for a film, Soundtrack composer of the year, Public Choice Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Discovery of the year, Best Young Belgian Composer, Major Contribution to the Art of Film Music and Sound, Most creative use of Existing Material on a soundtrack and Best Original Score of the year Not Released on an Album.
There is a major difference between World Soundtrack Awards and other Music Awards, that is, other Music Awards are given only to honor artist, but World Soundtrack Awards are given to honor artist as well as to providing educational, cultural and professionalism support to the artist. First World Soundtrack was awarded on 18 Oct 2001 at Ghent, Belgium. 2nd World Soundtrack award were awarded in 19 October 2002, followed by third World Soundtrack award on 12 October 2003, fourth World Soundtrack award were given on 9 October 2004, fifth World Soundtrack given on 15 October 2005, sixth World Soundtrack award given on 14 October 2006, seventh World Soundtrack award given on 20 October 2007, followed by eighth World Soundtrack awards given on 18 October 2008 and ninth World Soundtrack award were given on 17 October 2009.
The idea to create such academy comes in mind of many composers who were attending the Ghent International Film Festival and they thought this is a perfect place if a non profit structure could operate completely unbiased. A world Soundtrack award along with Ghent International Film Festival organizes seminars and workshop for focusing on aspects that are related to film music. This academy also gives brighter prospect to the young artist as it provides Discovery of the year award. Academy also organizes composing competition for young Belgian composers every year.
Above, I had tried to discuss World Soundtrack Awards, its history, its categories, what are the purposes for which this awards or academy founded and also what role does it play in promoting young artists.
